Melanie Halliman, a Paducah native and life-long writer and artist, returned to visual arts from the writing life four years ago. A fiber and textile artist, Halliman specializes in art quilting, surface design, and works most specifically with soft sculpture in a mixed media format. She concentrates on realism within a fantasy format and looks for ways to incorporate text and writing in her sculptures and quilting. On her website, she says, "I've been a writer for as long as I can remember, but decided my life was incomplete without my first love, visual arts. Even though I love metal, stone, and wood, as well as photography in all its many forms (35mm, b/w, and digital), it's fiber and textiles that are my preferred mediums. I learned to sew at age four, as did my mother, and my maternal grandmother was an excellent seamstress as well. Manipulating textiles of all kinds is my passion."
